Nurses from two Medical Centers make up our Union membership and are represented by Local 40.  These members are RNs from McLaren-Macomb (MM) and RNs from Crittenton Hospital Medical Center (CHMC).  We are a Local of Office and Professional Employee's International Union (OPEIU), which represents more than 140,000 nurses in the United States of America and Canada.  Membership between the two Medical Centers equals approximately 900 nurses and is divided into "units" within the Union:  MCRMC RN Unit and CHMC RN Unit.

Each of these Units has a structure of elected officers - a Vice President and Chief Steward(s).  In addition, membership in each Unit selects a number of Union Stewards to represent the nurses at its most basic level.

The Local Union, or the administrative "umbrella", that unites the separate Units retains an elected President, Treasure, Recording Secretary and Trustees.  All officers and trustees comprise the Executive Board whose activities are governed by a set of By-Laws that are modeled after and approved by the Union membership and the International.

The Local collects dues from its members, a percentage of which is paid per member to OPEIU, usually referred to as the "International".  Being part of the larger organization yields many advantages.  By the unification of many smaller, independent Unions a Union conglomerate can provide legal backing power, consultation, professional labor support, contract negotiation assistance, strike funding and much more.

Our Local 40 Executive Board is vigilantly committed to the mission of improving the wages, benefits and working conditions of our Nurses.  In addition, we zealously protect your worker rights and advance the perspective of professional nursing as seen through the prism of the professional nurse.  We advocate for the needs of all nurses.
