WHO IS OPEIU LOCAL 40 AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

Registered Nurses, Radiology Technologists and Technicians, and Service Workers from two Medical Centers make up our Union membership and are represented by Local 40.  These members are RNs and Service Workers from McLaren-Macomb (MM-RN), RNs from Ascension Providence Rochester (APR-RN), and Radiology Technologists and Technicians from Ascension Providence Rochester (APR-RT).  We are Local 40 of Office and Professional Employee's International Union (OPEIU), which represents more than 140,000 medical professionals in the United States of America and Canada.  Membership between the two Medical Centers equals approximately 950 individuals, and they are divided into "units" within the Union:  MM-RN, MM-SG, APR-RN and APR-RT.

Each of these Units has a structure of elected officers - a Vice President and a Chief Steward for the larger units.  In addition, membership in each Unit selects a number of Union Stewards to represent the members at its most basic level.

The Local Union, or the administrative "umbrella", that unites the separate Units retains an elected President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary and Trustees (3).  All officers and trustees comprise the Executive Board whose activities are governed by a set of By-Laws that are modeled after and approved by the Union membership and the International.

The Local collects dues from its members, a percentage of which is paid per member to OPEIU, usually referred to as the "International".  Being part of the larger organization yields many advantages.  By the unification of many smaller, independent Unions, a Union conglomerate can provide legal backing power, consultation, professional labor support, contract negotiation assistance, strike funding and much more.

Our Local 40 Executive Board is vigilantly committed to the mission of improving the wages, benefits and working conditions of our members.  In addition, we zealously protect your worker's rights and advance the perspective of professional nursing as seen through the prism of the professional nurse.  We advocate for the needs of all of our members.

We have General Membership Meetings quarterly on the third Wednesday of the month in January, April, July, and October.  Your participation in these meetings is greatly appreciated.  Our Union is only as strong as its members!
